Bangkok Layover: Where to Store Bags & What to Do

A long layover at Suvarnabhumi isn’t dead time — it’s a free half-day in one of the world’s great cities. Two things make it work: leave your bag somewhere safe, and do the timing math so you’re back at the gate with room to spare. Here’s exactly how.

How long a layover do you need to leave the airport?

A traveler with a suitcase silhouetted against a city skyline at dusk
Under ~6 hours, stay at the airport. Six-plus, the city opens up.
  • Under ~5–6 hours — stay airside. Immigration both ways, the round trip, and a safe buffer will eat it.
  • 6–8 hours — doable: one or two nearby highlights if you keep it tight.
  • 8 hours or more — comfortable: a relaxed 4–5 hours in the city.

The math: clear arrival immigration, ~30 minutes each way on the Airport Rail Link, your time in the city, then be back at the airport about 3 hours before your next departure for re-check-in, immigration, and security. Build in traffic if you taxi. (Check your airline’s re-check-in window — it varies.)

Leave your bag first

  • Airport counter — fine if you’ll loop back through the airport anyway; Suvarnabhumi’s counters run ~฿100–150/bag/day (see the airport storage guide).
  • Better for exploring — store one rail stop into the city, near where you’ll actually be, so you don’t backtrack. A booked spot is ~฿110/day all-in, any size, guaranteed.

Getting into the city — and back in time

The Airport Rail Link reaches central Bangkok in under half an hour.
  • From Suvarnabhumi — the Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai (central) in about 26–30 minutes, roughly 06:00–24:00, every 10–15 minutes, for pocket change. It connects to the BTS at Phaya Thai and the MRT at Makkasan/Phetchaburi.
  • From Don Mueang — buses, the SRT Red Line, or a taxi reach the centre.
  • Night layover — watch the last train (~midnight); after that it’s a taxi back.

What to do, by how many hours

Keep your plan near the rail line so you’re never far from the way back.
  • ~6 hours — one highlight near the line: a riverside temple (Wat Arun / Wat Pho), or a mall plus a Thai massage near Phaya Thai or Siam.
  • ~9 hours — a temple, a proper lunch, and a wander through a market.
  • 12 hours+ — add a rooftop bar at dusk and dinner before you head back.

Golden rule: keep everything close to the Airport Rail Link or a BTS/MRT line, so the trip back is fast and predictable.

Don’t-miss-your-flight rules

  • Set a hard turnaround alarm — pick a "leave the city by" time and honour it.
  • Budget the return buffer — ~3 hours before departure at the airport, more in rush hour.
  • Keep documents on you — passport and boarding pass never go in a stored bag.
  • Confirm your bag’s pickup hours — make sure you can collect it before you need to be back.

Frequently asked questions

How long a layover do I need to leave Suvarnabhumi?

About 6 hours minimum to make it worthwhile; 8 hours or more is comfortable for one or two attractions. Under ~5–6 hours, stay at the airport.

Where do I store my bag during a Bangkok layover?

Use an airport left-luggage counter if you’ll return through the airport, or — better for exploring — store one rail stop into the city near your first stop.

Roughly 26–30 minutes from Suvarnabhumi to Phaya Thai in central Bangkok, running about 06:00–24:00 every 10–15 minutes. Verify current hours before a late-night layover.

Is it worth leaving the airport for a short layover?

Under about 5–6 hours, no — the round trip plus buffers leaves too little time. Relax in a lounge instead.
